EMILY Maitlis and Jon Sopel have quit the BBC - as more big names follow Andrew Marr out of the door. It comes after Newsnight host Maitlis was rapped for "bias" by the broadcaster when she re-tweeted a post by Piers Morgan criticising the Government for its coronavirus response.
Despite the presenter deleting her retweet within just 10 minutes, someone complained about it. The BBC’s editorial complaints unit then upheld the allegation against her.
The star is a huge loss to the Corporation. In 2019, her car crash interview with Prince Andrew - during which he claimed he couldn't have abused accuser Virginia Giuffre because he doesn't sweat - led to the duke stepping back from the royal frontline.
Andrew settled Ms Giuffre's civil lawsuit against him for a reported £12million last week. Sopel was the Beeb's North American editor.
