As you’ve likely heard by now, Denis Villeneuve’s “Dune” is an enthralling, visceral, immersive space opera. This dense saga also creates a rich contextual world of politics, culture, religion, and history (read our review here).
There is also a mystical, enigmatic quality to the film via one of its mysterious religions, the Bene Gesserit, described in the Frank Herbert books, as a kind of pseudo-religious organization of all-women spies, nuns, scientists, and theologians who use genetic experimentation, political interference, and religious engineering to further their own agenda of ascending the human race with a chosen one figure.
