Driver dies during British land speed record attempt at Elvington Airfield

A driver has died while attempting to set a British land speed record. The fatal crash happened this evening at Elvington Airfield, situated between York and Market Weighton.

Members of the public have been urged to stay away from the site as police launch an investigation. North Yorkshire Police said: "Shortly after 4.30pm today (October 1) police were called to a serious collision at Elvington Airfield near York. "Officers are at the scene with the ambulance service.

Please do not try to access the airfield at this time." It is currently unclear what vehicle the driver was in or how fast they were going.
