British Transport Police say the action could have killed the driver and risked the lives of everyone onboard. The train, which was running from Aberdeen to Montrose, had to be taken out of service after the incident in Cove Bay on Saturday.
British Transport Police are investigation and anyone with information is being urged to get in touch. A statement posted on Twitter by the force said: "ScotRail service Aberdeen to Montrose was had taken out of service today after a traffic cone was thrown from a bridge in #CoveBay.
