The pictures of exhausted medics after shifts in hospitals – all bloodshot eyes and cheeks angrily indented from face masks – have shocked us all.

So when we arrange a Zoom chat with TV’s Dr Ranj Singh, we’re not sure what state we’ll find him in. His smiley face frequently pops up on This Morning, nabbed him a BAFTA for his CBeebies show Get Well Soon, and proved popular in 2018’s Strictly Come Dancing But as coronavirus tightened its deathly grip across Britain, Dr Ranj decided to step back from his media work and focus on supporting the NHS.

Nursing a coffee in his south west London kitchen – think shiny grey surfaces and clean white lines (‘I hate clutter, I’m very tidy’) – the paediatric A&E consultant looks surprisingly fresh-faced.
