DOCTOR Who favourite David Tennant made a sensational return to the show tonight - after outgoing time lord Jodie Whittaker regenerated “backwards.” For the first time in the history of the BBC1 sci-fi series, a doctor was seen morphing into a former incarnation.

Next year David, 51, is expected to front a series of special episodes alongside former companion Catherine Tate, 52, to mark the 60th anniversary of the show.

He’s then set to regenerate into the newest doctor, Sex Education’s Ncuti Gatwa, 30, for a full series, probably in 2024. As part of a spectacular farewell to Jodie, 40, the feature-length episode called The Power of the Doctor featured a further SIX doctors making cameos.

A TV insider said: "The episode whipped fans of Doctor Who into a complete frenzy because they won't have seen an episode featuring so many time lords in one place. "Plus, the return of David will be the ultimate treat as he is still considered to be the fans' favourite timelord after the show enjoyed its successful reboot in 2005.
