Dennis Bergkamp has identified the tactical change that led to Arsenal's decline under legendary manager Arsene Wenger. The Gunners enjoyed a glittering period in the late '90s and early '00s, winning three Premier League titles using a 4-4-2 formation.
In the set-up, Bergkamp operated as a No.10 behind Nicolas Anelka then Thierry Henry, forming potent partnerships with both of his French teammates.
However, Wenger deviated from the system that had brought so much success at Highbury as the 'Invincibles' team of 2003/04 gradually broke up.
Instead, he opted to field a lone striker and introduce an extra body in midfield. And Bergkamp believes the Gunners' lack of trophies after he left the club in 2006 was partly due to the new shape.
