Two crew on David Attenborough’s A Perfect Planet series came close to death when a boat carrying them down a river in Peru capsized.

A third member was peppered with 70 inch-long spines from an underwater palm and had to be rushed back to England for treatment.

The team was filming fire-ants which survive floods in the Amazon by building a raft using their own bodies. Assistant producer Toby Nowlan and cameraman John Brown had their amazing escape while returning to the river port of Nauta with all their equipment strapped to the roof of their boat.

The vessel was overwhelmed by the ferocious current and overturned. Nowlan and Brown, below deck at the time, had just enough time to grab their passports and swim out.
