The condition happens when a patient who externally appears to only possess male genitalia also has female organs internally.In this case the man, from Kosovo, who had presented and lived as a man his whole life, was found to also have a womb when surgeons began the operation to remove what they had believed to be a hernia.The patient had also been born with only one descended testicle, which medical staff also found alongside the womb, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.Doctors subsequently diagnosed the patient with persistent mullerian ducts syndrome (PMDS).While in the womb, all foetuses develop a proto-womb which is known as the Mullerian Duct, which some hormones usually cause to shrink and eventually disappear.However sometimes these hormones are not produced, which means the Mullerian Duct grows into a womb, ovaries, and fallopian tubes.Meanwhile, because a different hormone is responsible for a penis growing, this can lead to a child being born as intersex, meaning that they are born with both a penis and a vagina.Current common practice is for one set of genitals to be removed, with medics or parents making the decision, however some advocacy groups have argued that this deprives the child of a choice that should be theirs to make.People with PMDS are at a much higher risk of being infertile but the patient had three children before the shocking discovery. .
