Corrie has shone a spotlight on the condition, while sadly the debilitating diseases affects hundreds of real-life families, and fans are being urged to donate just £1 to help The Lily Foundation which has worked with the soap on the story.

Founder Liz Curtis, who set up The Lily Foundation after losing her daughter Lily to a mitochondrial disease when she was eight-months-old, said: "If everyone who watched Coronation Street donated just £1 we would raise £6million - that would make a life changing difference!"Oliver, the son of Leanne Battersby and Steve McDonald, was diagnosed back in May after suffering from seizures.The Lily Foundation's role has been to ensure that the scripts are realistic and reflect real life stories of families.
