The coronavirus crisis in the UK could last for another year and lead to 7.9 million people being hospitalised, it is tonight claimed.
Chiefs at Public Health England (PHE) are said to have suggested as many as 80 per cent of Britons will become infected in the next 12 months, according to a leaked document seen by the Guardian.
It is feared the pandemic will put extra pressure on an already overstretched NHS. A PHE briefing for senior NHS officials is said to have read: "As many as 80% of the population are expected to be infected with Covid-19 in the next 12 months, and up to 15% (7.9 million people) may require hospitalisation."
