Coronation Street stopped me from coming out as gay, claims soap legend

CORONATION Street icon Amanda Barrie claims show bosses decided it would be best for her not come out publicly. Amanda, who played Alma Sedgewick on the ITV soap for 20 years, made the bombshell comments on Loose Women.

The 86-year-old actress refused to publicly confirm her sexuality while starring on the soap and later came out as bisexual.

She appeared on Wednesday's Loose Women alongside her wife, writer Hilary Bonner and claimed there was a looming threat of being 'outed' to the press while on the soap.

The Loose Women panellists quizzed the actress about what it was like being in the closet while working on one of the country's most popular TV shows. "There was no camp of any kind at that time," Amanda started. "There was various people in charge of the show so, they call[ed] the tune.
