Indian police baton-charged crowds outside alcohol stores on Monday as the first alcohol sales were allowed again since the country went into lockdown six weeks ago, While many restrictions remain in place, some 130 “standalone” liquor stores in the city of Delhi opened – meaning there was simply not enough booze to meet demand.

Already by 9.30am, queues of hundreds swelled outside the shops, with punters sharing posts on social media that showed lines of masked people snaking around buildings.

A few hours later, #LiquorShops became the top trend on Twitter in India. Witnesses said that more than 500 people waited to be served at a store in the Kaylan Puri neighbourhood when the shop needed to be closed.
