Community groups team up to tackle road safety worries in Perthshire village

Muthill residents are on a drive to tackle road safety issues in their village.For years they have been calling for more traffic calming measures to be implemented at various hot spots in the area.And now Muthill and Tullibardine Community Council is teaming up with Muthill Village Trust to call on the local authority to heed their concerns.Build-outs on the pavement, a puffin crossing, speed bumps and 20mph limits through the village are all ideas being put forward by the community.

Members of the community council recently met with a representative from Perth and Kinross Council’s road safety team. Community councillor Davie Woods said: “He was good.

He spent an hour with us and went right round the whole village. It was well worth him coming out. It will be a bit more positive if something actually happens.“All the roads are quite fast.

Even if we could just get a five year plan or even a ten year plan from Perth and Kinross [Council] saying they can do something would be good.”Electronic vehicle-activated slow down signs were erected at either end of the village in 2018 but drivers still speed through the main thoroughfare.Many locals would like to see the signs further out so that those who do slow down have done so by the time they reach the edge of the village rather than once they are in it.And with no school crossing patroller at the moment, parents are fearful that it is only a matter of time before there is a serious accident.Other danger areas being flagged up are Station Road and Thornhill Street.Community councillor Donald Hood said: “There are some serious issues.
