Cannonball Run record averaging 106mph set during coronavirus lockdown sparks outrage

A new record has been set for the New York City to Los Angeles' Cannonball Run made famous by the Burt Reynolds film of the same name, it has been claimed.

The race traditionally starts at Red Ball Garage in Manhattan before finishing at the Portofino Hotel and Marina in Redondo Beach, California.

Now an anonymous team, who have not come forward for fear of arrest, claims to have completed the run in 26 hours and 38 minutes, beating the previous record by 47 minutes.

Depending on the specific route taken, it would mean the car averaged more than 106 mph during the 2,800-mile journey. The car used was a 2019 Audi A8, painted white, with few modifications other than having a huge fuel tank installed.
