Canelo Alvarez confirmed he will activate his rematch clause after boxing's pound-for-pound king was outpointed by Dmitry Bivol. The undisputed super-middleweight champion suffered his first loss since 2013 and only the second of his career as he stepped up to light-heavyweight.
He'd taken on more than he could chew in WBA (Super) champion Bivol, who was dominant in the unanimous decision victory. After all three judges scored it 115-113 in the Russian's favour, Canelo announced his intention to immediately active the option of a rematch which had been included in his contract for the fight.
Bivol, who is now 20-0, was also keen to run it back.It puts the Mexican's plans for a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin, which had already been lined up as his next bout, on hold for now. "It can't end like this," Canelo said post-fight."I lost today and he won.
No excuses. That's what happens in boxing, you win and lose. He's a great fighter.“I’m very proud and competitive. I’ve gone up and fought at 175lbs, I’ve gone out of my comfort zone to fight at a weight that’s not mine, there’s no shame in that.
