Bury council leader to step down after less than a year in charge

The leader of Bury council is to step down after less than a year in charge. Ex-police inspector Coun David Jones, who was appointed chief of the Labour-run town hall 10 months ago, will formally step aside next week.

Cabinet member Coun Eamonn O’Brien is set to take over following a meeting next Wednesday (May 20). Coun Jones, 64, said it was a 'demanding role' and felt the time was right to hand over the reins.

He said: “I took up the position quite quickly to fill a vacancy. "I’ve enjoyed it, it’s been great.
