Mercedes have dropped their appeal against Max Verstappen's controversial win in Abu Dhabi, meaning the Dutchman is the new F1 world champion at the expense of Lewis Hamilton.

Verstappen claimed his first World Championship crown in the most dramatic of circumstances at the Yas Marina circuit on Sunday.

With Hamilton seemingly on his way to a record-breaking eighth title, Nicholas Latifi's crash bunched up the field with just a few laps remaining.

Even at that point there still seemed little danger for the Mercedes man, who had the cushion of five lapped cars between himself and Verstappen.
