Boris Johnson has warned his Cabinet there is a “huge spike coming” of Omicron covid infections as he desperately fights off a Tory rebellion against new coronavirus restrictions.
The Prime Minister told colleagues in a virtual cabinet meeting on Tuesday morning that it was too early to say if the number of cases in South Africa of the new strain had peaked.
The Chief Medical Officer, Chris Witty, told Ministers to expect significant increase in hospitalisations and a doubling time of two to three days for the numbers infected.The Prime Minister’s spokesman said the cabinet were told of the “balanced and proportionate” measures being taken as the UK ramps up the covid booster programme in a bid to prevent the new variant swamping the NHS.
