Thousands faced airport queues of up to three hours yesterday on the busiest getaway weekend since the pandemic took grip. Staff shortages caused by the Covid app “pingdemic”and broken machines were blamed for huge delays.
One terminal had only ONE Border Force officer checking passports. Almost 400,000 Brits are jetting away after prices for amber-list destinations tumbled by up to half.
Gatwick said it expected to see between 25,000 to 27,000 passengers a day – up from a low of just 15 flights a day at the height of the crisis.
Stansted has 1,330 planes taking off this weekend, compared with 735 at the same time last year.= But travellers at Heathrow had to queue at least two hours to check in.
