Bolton Wanderers and at the time, was the greatest tragedy in British football history.It was the second leg of the FA Cup quarter final and Wanderers were playing Stoke City, having gone 2-0 up in the first leg.The game stopped 12 minutes in when referee George Dutton noticed fans spilling onto the pitch from the railway end terrace.
He was also informed by police that there had been a death due to crushing after two barriers collapsed with the pressure of the supporters.After a half-hour delay, on police advice Mr Dutton decided to continue and finish the game, despite some corpses still being at the side of the pitch.
