The 25-year-old joined the Whites in the January transfer window from Blackpool, putting pen to paper on an 18-month contract.
The former Rochdale midfielder went on to make 21 appearances for Bolton and become a first choice for Ian Evatt in the holding midfield role as the Whites charged up the League Two table to seal automatic promotion back to League One.
Williams came through the youth team ranks at Premier League giants Liverpool, where he made just one appearance, before having loan spells at Notts County and Swindon Town.
