With lashings of sex, lies and scandal, ITV’s Belgravia is set to be a surefire hit. The period drama, which starts tonight, has been written by Lord Julian Fellowes – the mastermind behind TV smash Downton Abbey.
The six-part series, which stars Tamsin Greig, Philip Glenister and Harriet Walter, lifts the lid on the lives of 19th century toffs in London’s poshest neighbourhood.
But Belgravia wasn’t always a hotspot for the wealthy. The area was once a crime-ridden marshland called Five Fields, favoured by robbers, bandits and highwaymen.
But in 1824, this once-dingy pocket of London was transformed into a haven for the wealthy by Thomas Cubitt – the great-great-great grandfather of Camilla, Duchess of Cornwall.
