BAFTA-winning TV writer, who was famed for penning shows such as Fat Friends, died on Sunday (May 15).Fat Friends ran from 2000 until 2005, starred the likes of James Corden and Ruth Jones, and was later turned into a musical which toured the UK in 2018.The actress and director wrote a number of other famous shows, including ITV's Girlfriends, The Syndicate and Band of Gold.A spokesperson for Rollem Productions, her TV production company, said: "It is with profound sadness that we announce the untimely and sudden passing of our beloved friend, mentor and colleague Kay Mellor on Sunday 15th May 2022."We have lost a phenomenal talent and a true luminary.

We ask that you please respect the privacy of the family and friends at this time."Mellor started her decorated writing career at Granada Television in the 1980s, where she wrote for ITV's hit soap Coronation Street.She soon spawned the award-winning ITV children's drama Children's Ward alongside her Coronation Street colleague Paul Abbot, which first aired in 1995 and later won a BAFTA.As an actress, she starred in her own adaptation of Jana Eyre in 1997 and appeared in stage shows such as Three Girls in Blue, which she also penned.Mellor received an OBE in the 2009 Birthday Honours list and in 2014 was awarded the Writers Guild Award for Outstanding Contribution to Writing.She also became a Fellow of the Royal Television Society before winning the Broadcast's Special Recognition Award in 2020.Heartfelt tributes flooded in from Mellor's fans and peers following the sad news of her passing.The BBC’s chief content officer, Charlotte Moore, paid an emotional tribute to Kay Mellor in a statement.Moore said: "I'm shocked and deeply saddened to hear that Kay Mellor has suddenly.
