These days the fertile riverlands around Glenlochar present a more tranquil scene although Shirley, as chairperson of Balmaghie Community Council, is still fighting and winning small battles on behalf of the people.Born in the family home at Crossmichael in 1968, Shirley grew up on Old Ferry Road, the street name a clue to times when crossing the River Dee to Balmaghie was by boat only.Her upbringing mirrored that of her parents who both grew up in rural Kirkcudbrightshire in days when Clydesdale horses could still be seen pulling the plough in spring.Mum Jeanie (Marshall) was born in Crossmichael while dad Robert Galloway came into the world at Southwick – pronounced “Soothick” in the local.
