Ethan Shanfeld SPOILER ALERT: This story contains spoilers for “Severance” Season 2, Episode 10, now streaming on Apple TV+.

Of all the mysteries spooled out in “Severance,” the purpose of the goats has been the most random. In Season 1, Mark (Adam Scott) and Helly (Britt Lower) stumble upon an unfamiliar man bottle-feeding one, but then the goats are never mentioned again until Season 2, when the severed lovebirds follow deeper down the rabbit hole.

In Episode 3 of Season 2, they come across a massive room with grass hills, and dozens of goats grazing them. It turns out there’s an entire Lumon department that tends to the animals, called Mammalians Nurturable, led by a highly strung woman named Lorne, played by “Game of Thrones” alum Gwendoline Christie.

Mark and Helly urge Lorne and her department to aid them in their search for Gemma/Ms. Casey (Dichen Lachman), and they reluctantly agree.
