Asda to hand £340million of Covid-19 tax relief back - Waitrose refuses

Asda has said it will hand back £340 million saved in business rates relief, joining four other supermarkets. Tesco, Morrisons, Sainsbury's and Aldi had already agreed to pay the money back.

That takes the total amount of tax being paid back by the nation's grocers to almost £1.75billion. Asda president Roger Burnley said: "Almost half our customers are telling us they expect their financial position to worsen in the next 12 months and we recognise that there are other industries and businesses for whom the effects of Covid-19 will be much more long lasting and whose survival is essential to thousands of jobs. "We will, therefore, be discussing with the Government and devolved authorities the best mechanism to ensure the relief we have
