increased from 13.7 per cent in 2017-19 to 22 per cent during the pandemic, according to a study by the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Health & Wellbeing.

Binge drinking rose too (up from 10.8 per cent to 16.2 per cent in the same period) with the increase most pronounced among ‘women over 25, white ethnic groups and those with degree-level education’ – a demographic I fit into.

In some respects, it’s hardly surprising. Even before the pandemic, women aged 50 to 70 were more likely than younger women to consume alcohol at levels that exceed low-risk drinking guidelines – and considered it perfectly fine, as long as they appeared in control.
