She even went one step further by painting her nails black and wearing dark makeup which exaggerated her striking blonde hair.Ahead of the glamorous event, which was held at the London Groucho Club, Helen said: “Writing can feel like an uphill battle, so I created CWIP to make a difference and amplify women's extraordinary witty voices."Getting industry recognition gives talented writers the exposure and support they need."Writing funny stuff really does change one's mood – I can't wait for all the amazingly hilarious submissions to roll in and to make the winner's dreams come true."Previous nominee Hannah Dolby praised the award launched by the actress: "The Comedy Women in Print Awards have truly changed my life and made my lifelong dream of being an author come true." Following Comedy Women In Print Hannah's first novel, No Life for a Lady, will be published next year and is described as the most joyful book of 2023."A well as being a successful actress Helen is a comedy writer herself having written the novel Losing It which was nominated for an award at the Edinburgh film festival First Book Award in 2015.

The 67-year-old is an icon in the industry having been the only woman to write and perform in BBC Radio 4's In One Ear which ran from 1984 to 1986.She also writes for for The Telegraph, and is currently the agony aunt for Woman’s Weekly.Helen has one daughter with her ex, journalist and former editor of The Observer, Roger Alton.
