More than 14,000 patients came through the doors of Wigan Infirmary 's A&E department and Leigh Walk-in Centre in May – the highest number for years.
Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh Teaching Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust, which manages urgent care services at both sites, pleaded with the public to avoid the Royal Albert Edward Infirmary twice in two weeks at the end of May.
