The 60th anniversary will concentrate on a community storyline, about disparate folk joining together to quite literally save the cobbles. ‘It’s a salutary lesson in getting back to basics and realising what Coronation Street is all about, jettisoning the car crashes and the stunts, the burning buildings.’Whether it will create the talking-point television of the affair between Deirdre and Mike Baldwin, with its immortal ‘You’re boring, Ken!’ put-down, or introducing soap’s first transgender character in the much-loved Hayley Cropper, or the rape of David Platt, remains to be seen.
