'28 killed in 4 days' as cartel kingpin's arrest sparks bloody war with El Chapo's sons

killed in just four days in a fresh wave of bloodshed following the arrest of a notorious Mexican drug lord. Rafael Caro Quintero, 69, was arrested by Mexican security forces in Sinaloa last Friday (July 15).

The Caborca Cartel boss - known as 'the narco of narcos' - was also a founding member of the Guadalajara Cartel in the 1970s and has been wanted by the US in relation to the murder of DEA agent Enrique 'Kiki' Camarena in 1985. According to InSight Crime, Caro Quintero's men are fighting off incursions from a faction of the Sinaloa Cartel loyal to the sons of Joaquín 'El Chapo' Guzmán.

Los Chapitos, as they are known, are thought to be headed by Ovidio Guzmán - a.k.a El Ratón - as well as Iván Guzmán and Jesús Guzmán.The towns of Guaymas-Empalme, Cajeme, and Caborca are the hotspots for this new wave of killings, crucial trafficking regions linking Sonora's capital Hermosillo to the US border.
