Pooches purchased in lockdown are now being threatened by the possibility that their owners are no longer able to look after them once life returns to normal - and those who have been hit financially over the last year may not be able to afford to keep their pet.
There was ‘a significant increase in the stray and abandoned dogs’ in the wake of the 2008 recession, according to canine charity Dogs Trust. "Combined with a lack of safe places for them to go, this resulted in many healthy dogs being put to sleep," the organisation said.
